Our values

Serving local people.

Our local family business continues to thrive because we believe in two core principles.

Honesty

Being privately owned, we don’t have to satisfy investors, so the prices you pay are always the best we can provide.

Passion

We love what we do, so we enjoy using our knowledge to help you find the most suitable materials for your project.

Our history

From horse-drawn to motor-powered deliveries

As the first steam-powered sawmill in the Midlands, through the centuries, we have supplied local wheelwrights, builders and joiners.

One of our founders, Thomas, built most of the houses in rows on Beacon Hill, Long Row and Tolney Lane in Newark, as well as many other properties.

The story of the 1905 Lincoln typhoid epidemic

When Lincoln was left without safe drinking water, it infected 1006 people and claimed 131 souls in just six months. We’re proud that one of our founders, Thomas Smith, organised a pure water supply for the area at his own expense.

Andy Blow, from Blow By Blow Productions, has documented the event, which you can watch here.
